Remember – it’s never too early to think about
becoming a nurse. Now that you are able to make some choices in the
classes you take, think about what might interest you. If you are
considering a career in nursing we have a few suggestions. For more

Try to be your best in and out of school each day. This will really
pay off. Check out the links where nurses talk about their experiences. |
Study
hard – as a nurse you will really need to communicate.
All kinds of communication skills are important. Nurses are knowledgeable
about a lot of different types of information. They perform calculations
quickly and accurately, use computers and all kinds of equipment,
and need to be physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy. |
Ask
for extra help. Most schools have programs available. |
Do
a project - about nursing in school, read about the important
things nurses have done. |
Join a nursing club - health career club, or
become the person who starts one at your school or in your neighborhood.
Talk to your family, teachers or school nurse, they can help you. |
Think
finance - start thinking about ways to cover your nursing
school tuition. There are lots of scholarships and programs to help
with this. |
Explore your options - see if your community
has programs available so you can learn more about Nursing close
to home. Some healthcare agencies and schools provide job shadowing
programs or internships. Sometimes you can even earn some money
while you learn about a career as a nurse. Some of these opportunities

Investigate - find out if your school has courses
available to prepare you for a career in Nursing or in the Health
field. You might even be able to take courses for college credits
at your High school. |
Suggested courses to prepare you for a Nursing career:
Math – Algebra is very important, it will
help you in chemistry, performing medication calculations, and other
calculations as well as problem solving. Also, some nurses need to
know how to perform all kinds of budgetary skills.
Science – Biology (the study of Life), Chemistry,
Physics, or Anatomy and Physiology, Health and Physical Education.
English – In high school you will need four
years. Remember reading and writing skills are very important for
communication. Even public speaking courses will help you.
Computer courses – Nurses use all kinds of
computerized equipment. Many nurses use computers everyday to write
reports, look up information, and communicate. Some nurses work in
the fields of computer science and perform computer networking, program
design, web design, and many other computer specialty areas. Nurses
work with all kinds of cutting edge technology – we monitor
patients heart rhythms, b/p, O2 levels, just to name a few things.
Palm pilots and mini computers are being used more and more.
Social Studies – learn about history, government,
sociology, and psychology –this will help you have better people
skills.
Foreign Languages – this will help you with
communication skills as well as understanding more about other cultures. |
